How are they restored?
The first step in restoring a rocking horse is to think; be careful as an antique rocking horse can often be worth more in its unaltered state. However, restoration can still be an option if you wish to get an old rocking horse into a safe and usable state.
In the case of a full restoration of antique rocking horses, all the plaster will be completely removed, and the horse's stand then broken down into its component pieces. The mane, tail and any leather fittings will be replaced with brand new fittings.
Any parts of the rocking horse's body that aren't up to scratch are replaced, and are blended into the existing body with adhesive. The rocking horse itself is then taken through the steps by which it was created, of replastering, painting, brand new mane, tale and saddlery are fitted. The stand is then sanded, restored and varnished.
And the rocking horse is safe and sturdy just as new.
